Packers and Plugs

Innovative Grouting and Sealing Solutions

VAN RUTH® manufactures high quality specialized drill and bore hole plugs and packers facilitating ground stability and water control for use in underground and surface mining operations. We offer a wide range of borehole plugs and packers ranging from cementing and wedging, directional drilling, grouting, dewatering, pressure grouting, hoisting anchors, float shoes and collars, mechanical handset packers and associated problem solvers,

Deep or problematic drill holes are often of major concern to exploration and mining development. Satisfactory results in these conditions cannot always be guaranteed. Ground conditions such as broken and caving formations, sheer zones, pressure zones, washouts, lost circulation and so on are often battled with for some time using various methods. If results are negative the drill hole has either to be cased off and reduced or if not practicable, abandoned. Consequently, explorers and miners are less inclined to tackle drill projects of this possible nature resulting in ore bodies not being proved or a viable mining venture not realized.

VAN RUTH® equipment has a worldwide reputation of 50 Years dealing with many problems encountered in today's mining environments with an ongoing commitment to mine safety. Hole condition is of paramount importance to trouble free drilling and lower operating costs.

Van Ruth Packers are available in B, N, H, and P sizes.

VAN RUTH® CEMENTING AND WEDGING PLUGS (CW PLUG) are highly effective as bridge plugs for spot cementing sections of holes and are also used for wedging in off bottom situations for branch hole operations.

CEMENTING AND WEDGING BOTTOM PACKERS (CWBP) are used for cementing, wedging , and isolating ore zones or in conjunction with Sub Set Grout Packers (SSGP) to pressure grout specific fault zones or with permeability testing to isolate previously tested zones. They are also used in place of the Cementing Wedging Plug (CW)for applications where controlling water ingress is required.

CEMENTING AND WEDGING TOP PACKERS (CWTP) are used to pressure grout unstable ground formations and fault zones or in conjunction with Cementing Wedging Bottom Packers (CWBP) to repair deteriorating up hole fault zones, thereby saving hole below fault and costly re-drill.

SSGP packers have many applications for both surface and under ground use and are designed for pressure grouting holes at any angle including overhead, they are equipped with a non-return valve to assist in pressure grouting.

GROUTING AND WATER CONTROL PACKERS (GWC) are designed for use in underground drill holes for grouting and water control and is usually set by hand. Large sizes can be used as stem pipes or drill collars for drilling smaller size holes, ie: the NGWC (76mm) packer can be used as

a collar pipe for drilling 46mm holes

Anchor plugs (ap) are designed to allow grouting of holes above horizontal to evacuate air from blind holes in tight formations.

Anchor plugs can also be supplied with adaptors to suit up hole hoisting purposes.

Construction: Aluminium

HOLD DOWN PLUGS (HD) are used with Cementing and Wedging Bottom Packers (CWBP) or Cementing and Wedging Top Packers (CWTP) when high pressures are present below packer locations.

A cementing wedging bottom packer and hold down plug can be set together. Procedure is to pump packer down some 20 meters or more, insert hold down plug into head rod, then follow instructions for setting packer. When raising rods from packer, continue until rods are about 400mm above packer and set hold down plug as per instructions.

Cement plugs or displacement plugs provide separation between wellbore fluids and are often used for cleaning out the id of the drill rods while grouting.

• Use in conjunction with a float collar to provide positive indication the cement has been displaced.

• Prevents cement contamination during pumping operations

Sizes Available: 2-3/8” – 13 3/8”

The Top Rubber plug has a core of epoxy coated sand compressed into a solid mass, which allows the plug to withstand shock when pumped to touchdown, while also retaining its ability to be drilled out. The core is completely encased in rubber and has a solid base to prevent separation.

The Bottom Rubber Plug has a core of cast aluminum that is PDC drillable. After the plug has completed its wiping of the casing ahead of the cement slurry and seated at touchdown, additional pump pressure will rupture the rubber diaphragm at the top of the core, allowing slurry to continue to its destination.

* Designed to clean the outer surface of the drill string as it is pulled out of the hole.

* Maintains cleanliness of the drill string.

* Reduces risk of equipment damage and malfunctions.

* Available with and without steel reinforcement

* Custom Sizes Available
